NEWBEAN / OUR COFFEE APPROACH
What is fourth-generation coffee?
At NEWBEAN, fourth-generation coffee is an approach to coffee development that combines precision fermentation, expert bean selection and blending. Our post-harvest methods help reveal the beans’ flavour potential and create profiles for different tastes and preparation methods.

NEWBEAN’s fourth-generation coffee approach
We approach coffee through clean and green biotechnology. Expertly selected green beans are processed through our own post-harvest methods. Flavour development, consistent production and profiles suited to different uses are central to this approach.
We use fourth-generation coffee to describe NEWBEAN’s approach to bringing science and coffee craft together. Our portfolio also includes carefully selected and blended third-generation coffee beans alongside coffees developed through our post-harvest innovations.
Precision fermentation and post-harvest development
A coffee’s character is shaped before brewing. Bean selection, post-harvest processing, roasting and blending all influence its flavour profile. At NEWBEAN, we combine precision fermentation technology with selection and blending expertise.
- Bean selection: We choose coffees around the intended flavour profile and use.
- Post-harvest development: Our methods help reveal the coffee’s natural flavour potential.
- Profile development: We consider flavour, quality targets, price levels and service needs together.
Fermentation is a processing method rather than a brewing method. Preparation depends on whether you choose filter coffee, espresso, Turkish coffee or capsules.
How does it relate to third-generation coffee?
NEWBEAN’s portfolio brings together third-generation coffees prepared through selection and blending expertise with fourth-generation coffees developed through our post-harvest innovations. This distinction describes how we develop coffee; it does not specify one brewing device or roast level.
Our espresso range includes Nordic Roast and Italian Roast craft blends. Our fourth-generation filter range includes Everyday, Rubus, Tropical and Safari, each with its own flavour character. The product cards show each coffee’s category, approach and tasting notes.
Which coffee profiles do we offer?
| Range | Example coffees | Flavour character |
|---|---|---|
| Fourth-generation filter coffee | Everyday, Rubus, Tropical, Safari | Profiles ranging from cocoa and hazelnut to blackberry, mango and bright fruit notes. |
| Premium coffee | Red Forest Tart, Purpurea | Red berries, cacao and vanilla; jasmine, bergamot and dark fruit notes. |
| Espresso blends | Nordic Roast, Italian Roast | Medium-light and dark roast options. |
| Turkish coffee | Traditional Taste, Rose, Strawberry, Chocolate & Hazelnut | Classic coffee character and distinctive flavour profiles. |
| Capsule coffee | Hazelnut, Cocoa, Mahlep, Caramel, Strawberry | Different flavour options in Nespresso-compatible capsules. |
These descriptions refer to the coffees’ flavour profiles. Consider the category, tasting notes and your preparation method when choosing a coffee.
How do you prepare fourth-generation coffee?
The fourth-generation approach does not require one brewing recipe. The product’s intended use and your preferred cup character determine how you prepare it.
- Filter coffee: Explore Everyday, Rubus, Tropical and Safari according to your taste. Tropical is also one of the coffees we recommend for cold brew.
- Espresso: Choose a blend that suits your machine, grinder and roast preference.
- Turkish coffee: Discover classic coffee alongside rose, strawberry or chocolate and hazelnut profiles.
- Capsules: Check your machine’s capsule compatibility when selecting our Nespresso-compatible options.
